Whether you’re studying something like Marine Biology, love diving or simply want to partner up a dive experience with some good karma points, our 4 week Marine Conservation Internship has the perfect balance of learning, diving and island living to suit anyone with a passion for the underwater world.

You don’t need any background in Marine Biology to participate in the course and it’s a fun and interactive way to prepare yourself for the Eco Dives you’ll be doing throughout the 4 weeks.

This eco specific course combines a variety of learning modules to help you understand the ecology and impact of scuba diving on the marine environment. You’ll learn about data collection methods, marine identification and artificial reef creation amongst many other topics.

During the first week you’ll attend 2 lectures per day which are accompanied by dives and snorkel sessions to put your theory into practice and, of course, explore the many beautiful dive sites that Koh Tao has to offer.

Not only that but on the second week there is some great dive certification included in the course, such as an Enriched Air Nitrox certification and the BSAC Marine Conservation Speciality.

The BSAC gives you the qualification needed to complete the Conservation Skill Development Programme and this is where the real hands-on conservation comes into play!

You will accompany marine biologists and scientists in the collection of data across Koh Taos sites, all of which will be used to track the status of the wildlife and coral gardens. This data is crucial to the sustainment of the dive tourism in the area and also includes a shark specific module which will give you a new found respect for the oceans top predator.

“I have a totally new understanding of the ocean and it’s a great addition to my post-degree CV”
Katrin, Germany

At the culmination of the course, you will put everything you learnt into practice, creating and implementing your own conservation project, the focus and structure of which is entirely down to you! So whether you choose to put together a fundraiser, website, posters or give a few educational talks of your own, you can utilise your own personal skills to help build on your CV and really make a difference.

During this final week you’ll also give some presentations to the Divemaster trainees on Koh Tao, passing on your knowledge to the next set of professional divers and, in turn, helping to make the dive community more informed and conscious about their impact on the marine environment.

Of course there will be an epic farewell party to celebrate all your efforts and let your hair down with all your fellow divers!

Our dive suppliers know that everyone has their own personal focus when it comes to conservation so there’s plenty of flexibility and scope to tailor it to your needs. Whether you’re using it to help towards a University degree or simply to make a bit of a difference, they can help you make the most of their knowledge and get want you want from the course.

PLEASE NOTE – You need to be at least an Advanced Open Water Diver to participate in the Marine Conservation Internship Programme. Don’t worry if you’re not though, we can set you up with them, it just means adding an extra week prior to the start date…learn more about our dive courses on Koh Tao here.
