When it comes to completing your snowboard instructor training in the southern hemisphere’s ‘land of the long white cloud’ — aka New Zealand — you’ll discover that it’s packed full of incredible mountain ranges and solid powder all season long.
On the north island our ski instructor training base is in Mt Ruapehu, right in the centre of the island and home to two of New Zealand’s biggest resorts — Turoa and Whakapapa — which lie on opposite sides of the mountain and will be accessible to you throughout your course.
Oh, and did we mention that it’s also volcano with a huge lake on the top?!
“This course was the best decision that I have ever made in my life! I could not have asked for a better way to spend a winter season.”
Throughout your 10 week ski instructor training season you’ll enjoy the 65 trails across 1050 hectares of ski fields that the Whakapapa Ski Area has to offer. And once your snowboard instructor skills are solid there are even 24 black and diamond runs, so you’ll really be able to test yourself!
Turoa, on the other hand, boasts the longest vertical descent in the whole of Australasia which is a firm bucket list tick for any serious skier. It also comes packed with some amazing back country areas and natural half-pipes. Turoa really has every base covered!
With the longest season in the southern hemisphere, Mt Ruapehu, and a back drop straight out of Lord Of The Rings (quite literally —the landscape of Mount Doom is just around the corner!) you’ll be treated to heaps of amazing powder and some of the best views on the planet.
Your instructors will guide and coach your snowboard skills over 10 weeks in a small group format. Complete with video feedback, equipment tuning clinics and back country days, this course will allow you to become a confident and competent boarder.
The aim of your Snowboard Instructor Course is to set you up for a career in the snowboard industry, so with that in mind you’ll be aiming to pass 2 internationally recognised snowboard qualifications — NZSIA Level 1 and 2 — to get your CV off to an amazing start.
New Zealand itself is a land of contrasts, which plays firmly to your advantage when completing your snowboard instructor training here. During the day you’ll play in the cold snow fields but your home base in Ohakune — about 17km or 20 minutes drive from the ski area — rarely gets snow, which means there’s heaps of warm weather fun to be had!
Your accommodation here is in the centre of town so you’ll be close to the action and can get really stuck into life in the epic centre of New Zealand’s north island ski and snowboard scene.
Lodge style accommodation on a twin share basis is the order of the day and your pad will come kitted out with 2 kitchens, 5 bathrooms, common areas, big screen TVs, a pool table and of course that all-important mountain view.
Ohakune itself has an epic night life too, so there will be no shortage of things to do and fellow travellers to socialise with.
So you’ll be living in style amongst heaps of other powder junkies!
Over 10 weeks you’ll snowboard heaps, meet a whole array of new friends, take your skiing to new levels and walk away with a well-rounded snowboard CV ready to go out and live the dream as a snowboard instructor!
Course Intro and Level 1 training — Get used to the New Zealand boarder’s way of life and work on your mountain fitness.
Level 1 Exam — Take the first qualification on offer (in the past we have had a 100% pass rate!).
Level 2 training and Personal Development — Here the level of training increases! You’ll go through some focussed Level 2 training and the Extended Personal Development First Aid Course
Level 2 Exam and Job Interview — The final week of the course is spent taking your Level 2 exam. It’s also in this week that you’ll have a chance to sit down with the snowboard school director and run through your options of work in the following season. This is when we sort out who wants what for the next season — whether you want to work in Canada or stay on the slopes of NZ, this is where it all starts.
NZSIA Level 1
The entry level snowboard instructor qualification for teaching novices and young children how to snowboard.
The New Zealand Snowboard Instructors Association (NZSIA) level 1 is an introduction to the NZSIA technique and methodology, and the role of snowboard teaching within the snowboard industry.
NZSIA Level 2
Level 2 is the next level for snowboarders looking to start teaching intermediate snowboarders out on the mountain. Both the training and final examination for this award require dedicated training and a high level of snowboarding competency. The NZSIA is a globally recognised award and will enable you to teach all over the world.
