When it comes to dream travel jobs, becoming a surf instructor take some beating – beautiful sandy beaches as your office, sun bleached hair and constantly tanned skin as you travel the globe passing on your stoke. Doesn’t sound like a bad life hey?!

And the creme de la creme of surf instructor training courses comes in the form of our 1o week South Africa experience, which combines world class surf coaching with heaps of adventure as you travel through one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes on the planet.

It’s as much an outright adventure as it is a surf trip!

No matter what your level of surfing you’ll be sure to enjoy this trip. You’ll travel from Cape Town up to Durban, taking in the sights and sounds of the many townships in between as you search for world class waves and soak up the adventure of a lifetime. Over 10 weeks you’ll be coached on all the surfing techniques and skills needed to pass your ISA Level 1.

As you work your way up the coast there’ll be plenty of water time to practice your surf skills under the watchful eyes of some of South Africa’s best surfers (including some ex-pros and SA’s national champions!) with a mixture of training sessions and free surfs – during all of which you’ll receive feedback and tips to push your surfing to the next level.

There’s also plenty of downtime outside of the waves too – there’s no point heading down to South Africa without getting to know the culture as well as seeing it from the ocean! During your trip you’ll be kept busy with day trips such as climbing the famous Table Mountain, volunteering at various local community projects and even spending a day on safari!

“Everything I wanted from my surfing trip and much, much more”
Jonty, UK

As you become more competent, confident and comfortable in the varying breaks that South Africa has to offer, you’ll build towards you ISA Level 1 examination in the final stop of your trip. This is your chance to really put all your skills to the test and earn a certification which will allow you to work all over the world as a qualified surf instructor.

Some of the Epic Gap Year team have spent years on the road utilising their ISA certifications and we can assure you it’s one of the most rewarding and fun jobs you could hope for!

It’s 10 weeks of sun, surf, good people and good times – everything you could possibly want from a gap year or a surf trip – no matter what your age or background.

South Africa not quite what you wanted?

We also offer surf instructor training courses in Australia and surf instructor courses in Morocco too!

Tour Reviews

May 8, 2017

I went on the trip from January to March this year. I’ve been traveling to other awesome surfers dream places like Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador and many spots in Europe, but the 3 months road trip along the “Gardenroute” at South Africas east coast was by far the best surf travel experience of my life. I learned so much because it’s an ongoing coaching every day which is unique! By the end of the trip you can also become a ISA surf instructor – I passed the exam – and heaps thanks to Chris Stevens here at EGY, he passed me on some of his contacts and boom! After a couple of mails and two Skype interviews I found a job in a surf camp in Costa Rica starting only 4 days after leaving South Africa. I did the Ticket to Ride trip to change my office to the beach and my working pants to a pair of board shorts and here I am – I’m loving it!
