Our Surf Instructor Course in Australia spans 12 weeks in a zero to hero format.
You’ll go through a structured programme of both land and water based lessons and gain confidence in the waves, learning about the ocean, the sport and taking the leap into a lifestyle that, with no doubt, will change how you see the world.
You DON’T need any prior Surf experience to enrol on the Surf Instructor course, but you DO however need to be able to swim 50 metres un-aided.
Your professional instructors will help push you in a supported and safe environment, allowing you to increase your fitness and ocean knowledge. Starting from the very basics of learning to “pop” and ride the white wash you’ll soon progress to riding unbroken waves, learning about ocean safety and become a confident and competent surfer.
Over the 3 month period, you will set yourself personal challenges, tackling bigger waves, a variety of surf breaks and get your paddle power sorted.
Trust us, paddle power is the key to enjoying a long, successful session in the waves!
Before you know it, you’ll have learnt all the skills needed to be a success surf instructor, breezed through an internationally recognised Level 1 Surf Instructor exam and you’ll be on your way to living the dream and passing on the stoke!
Not only that, but the course is built to give you the 40 hours practical coaching experience needed to solidify the qualification, an invaluable learning curve which will boost your teaching confidence and also get you a written reference too.
It’s not all hard work in the waves (if you can really call it that!) you’ll have the weekend free to explore the local area and take trips around the beautiful New South Wales coastline with your new surf buddies.
Whether you choose this time to head up to the hippy Meccas of Byron Bay or Yamba for some surf and partying or a bit further inland to check out the bushland of Oz, it’s totally down to you.
Throughout your Surf Instructor Course you’ll be based at the famous Spot X Surf Camp – a short drive above Sydney – where you’ll get settled into the surf camp lifestyle of sleep, eat, surf repeat!
You dorm accommodation at the amp comes kitted out with hammocks, a sound system, internet access, cooking facilities and even beach volleyball court you’ll have all the facilities you need to get embrace the surf instructor lifestyle and meet heaps of travellers and fellow surfers too.
You will leave here not only with a heap of qualifications, which mean the ocean is your office, but with heaps of amazing memories and a new found surf crew of like minded individuals, welcome to the surf community!

Head to Spot X with the 5 Day Great Aussie Guided Group Adventure. Instead of leaving Spot X on day 5, you will stay and start your Academy program.
Day 6 Onwards
The first two months of the course will focus on improving your technical skills, ocean experience, ocean awareness, and fitness and living the life of a surfer.
You’ll be exposed to varying and challenging conditions and learn how to deal with them. During the course we will prepare you to pass all qualifications including; open water rescue, advanced first aid, and your run swim run requirements.
Besides the qualifications we’ll also show you how to be an effective attentive instructor, by providing up to 40 hours of practical experience.
On your last day head to either Sydney, Byron Bay or Brisbane.

In addition to Epic Gap Year terms and conditions the following suppliers terms also apply;
MOJOSURF reserves the right to postpone any adventure due to bush fires, floods or humongous, gigantic waves.
MOJOSURF 100% surf guarantee only applies to lessons and training and this part will be refunded if MOJOSURF fall short in their instructions.
If cancellation occurs within 30 days from departure, 25% of payment will be retained by Mojosurf.
There will be no refunded if cancelled within 14 days.
MOJOSURF recommends that all persons take out personal travel insurance as MOJOSURF are not responsible for injuries, loss or damage of equipment or bad breath. All surfing participants must be able to swim for at least 50 metres unassisted.
Mojosurf 100% surf guarantee only applies to lessons and training and this part will be refunded if Mojosurf fall short in their instructions. Mojosurf recommends that you take out a travel insurance policy as Mojosurf is not responsible for injuries, loss or damage to personal equipment.
